The Affair runs off with Golden Globe

Showtime’s The Affair won the Golden Globe for best television drama last night, edging out Netflix’s House of Cards, ITV’s Downton Abbey and HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The Affair, recently renewed for a second season by the US cablenet, explores how two marriages are disrupted by a fling.

The drama, which averages 3.9 million weekly viewers, also beat CBS’s The Good Wife for the win, while its star Ruth Wilson scooped the award for best actress in a TV drama.

Meanwhile, FX crime drama Fargo also collected two prizes, winning best TV miniseries and best actor in a TV miniseries for Billy Bob Thornton.

US streaming giants Amazon Prime and Netflix also didn’t go away empty handed, in what is now becoming a familiar trend at major TV award ceremonies.

Amazon comedy-drama Transparent scooped two awards after it was named best TV comedy and its star, Jeffrey Tambor won best actor in a TV comedy for his role as a transgender woman.

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey picked up his first Golden Globe in eight attempts for his role in Netflix political thriller House of Cards.

Meanwhile, Maggie Gyllenhaal won best actress in a TV movie or miniseries for her role in BBC Two drama, The Honourable Woman.

The CW also won its first-ever Golden Globe, with Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez taking home the award for best actress in a TV comedy.

Hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, the 72nd Golden Globe Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills. The show aired live on US network NBC.
